The Government Alerts of a German 'Contagion' from the Anti-Immigration Discourse with Ceuta: "Vox Takes the Pot"

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General9 September 2026 at 06:13

The Spanish Government has been warning about the increase in "hate speech" since the beginning of the migration crisis in Ceuta. This situation has been closely monitored by the authorities, who view with concern the escalation of extremist positions related to immigration.

The overwhelming triumph of the German far-right last Sunday in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, fueled by anti-immigration positions, served as an example of the consequences of these speeches. The voting results for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in that LAND were interpreted as an alert by the Spanish executive.

Sources from the PSOE leadership indicated that "the only one who benefits from this is Vox," criticizing the lack of State responsibility on the part of the PP. The social democrats point out that the Popular Party cannot raise the tone further in its anti-immigration discourse because "the pot is set by Vox."

These statements came after Tuesday's Senate plenary session, in a context in which the Government continues to closely follow the latest polls on voting intentions and the evolution of far-right parties in Spanish politics.

Democracy in Times of Fear

The article analyses the crisis of contemporary democracy, arguing that politics has transformed into a permanent management of emergencies, where there is much talk of innovation but without a clear purpose. Citizens feel that decisions are made about their lives, but rarely with their participation, creating a void of frustration and distance between rulers and ruled. It is in this context of distrust and alienation that populist discourses find fertile ground to thrive.
