António José Seguro completed six months in office as President of the Republic on September 9, 2026, having taken office on March 9 after winning the February presidential election with approximately 66.84% of the votes. Since the night of his victory, he defined his style: he promised not to be a counter-power, but rather a demanding President focused on solutions and results, making clear that he would speak only when he deemed it the right moment.
The first six months were marked by several moments of direct intervention. Between April and May, after the storms that affected the center of the country, Seguro held an Open Presidency to identify failures in support mechanisms for the population. In June, he politically vetoed the bill on the use of flags on public buildings, considering that the proposal did not adequately distinguish humanitarian causes from political-party positions. In July, he intervened in the national exams crisis, demanding that no student be harmed by technical failures. And in August, he promulgated the Single Social Benefit, but expressed reservations about the need to protect the most vulnerable in the reform's regulation.
The issue of wildfires was another recurring theme. Seguro criticized the lack of prevention and pointed out that many recommendations from previous reports were left "in a drawer," reducing the State's response capacity. He specifically cited the recovery of Serra da Estrela, affected in 2022, as a promise unfulfilled for four years.
The Luís Neves case, Minister of Internal Administration, currently constitutes the most delicate political test. It involves investigations related to the use of a vehicle seized by the Judicial Police and led Chega to present a motion of no confidence in the Government. Seguro has adopted a reserved stance, stating that he is following the case and knows the Prime Minister's position, but avoiding publicly commenting on the minister's resignation, invoking the separation of constitutional powers.
