Died Tung Chee-hwa, first chief executive of Hong Kong after the sovereignty transition from the British Colony to China, in 1997. Tung governed the territory between 1997 and 2005, a period marked by major political and social challenges.

Tung was born in Shanghai, on May 29, 1937, into one of the richest families in China in the shipping sector. His family fortune was linked to the shipping company he inherited and expanded.

During his term, Hong Kong faced the Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998 and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) pandemic in 2003, which severely affected the territory. Tung submitted his resignation in March 2005, citing reasons related to health and the need for new leadership.
