OpenAI stated on Tuesday (8) that one of its artificial intelligence models solved a mathematical problem that has challenged researchers for generations, sparking a dispute with rival scientists over the merit of the discovery. The company released an AI-generated solution and a formal proof for the Navier-Stokes problem.
The creator of ChatGPT declared that it took 88 hours and millions of dollars in computational power to solve the problem. Navier-Stokes is one of seven "Millennium Problems," a list of some of the most difficult open questions in mathematics, compiled by the Clay Mathematics Institute.
The Navier-Stokes equations describe the motion of fluids, such as air and water, and are used in various practical applications, including aircraft development, weather forecasting, and the study of blood flow.
