The Finance Minister, Miranda Sarmento, expressed his expectation to achieve "at least a zero balance" in 2026. This projection comes in a context of global economic uncertainty and pressures on public finances of various countries.
Miranda Sarmento also guaranteed the "robustness" of Portuguese public accounts. The minister highlighted that, provided no extraordinary event occurs, the executive will be able to keep public accounts balanced.
According to the government official, beyond budgetary balance, a reduction in public debt is also planned. This fiscal consolidation goal is part of a broader strategy for public finance sustainability.
Sarmento's statements come at a time when the future of Portuguese and European budgetary policy is being discussed, focusing on each country's ability to ensure the stability of its public accounts.
