The New York Stock Exchange closed on Tuesday, September 8, with significant losses across the three main indices. The industrial Dow Jones was the biggest loser, with a 1.18% drop to 52,786.07 points. The benchmark S&P 500 index ended the session down 0.58% to 7,673.52 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 0.32% to 26,421.41 points.
Investors are particularly focused on US inflation data, due to be released on Friday. Fears of inflationary pressures, driven by the new escalation in oil prices, continue to weigh on market sentiment.
The market decline was exacerbated by the sharp appreciation of the Japanese yen against the dollar, which contributed to an unfavorable first trading day of the week. These combined factors created a risk-aversion environment among investors.
However, chipmaker Qualcomm stood out, rising 3.17% on the stock exchange after announcing a partnership with Amazon Web Services for data center infrastructure.
