Qatar announced its candidacy to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Middle Eastern country formalized its intention to organize what would be one of the largest sporting events in the world.
The candidacy has the unanimous support of the 22 nations that make up the Arab League. This support represents a significant political bloc in the Middle East and North Africa region.
If the candidacy is successful, the 2036 Games would mark the first time an Olympic and Paralympic event would be held in this region of the world. Until now, no Arab country has hosted the Olympic Games.
