Montenegro announces extraordinary supplement for pensioners and IRS relief up to the sixth bracket

SAPO Notícias8 September 2026 at 15:40

Prime Minister Montenegro announced an extraordinary supplement for pensioners and IRS tax relief measures up to the sixth tax bracket. These measures were presented as part of a Government strategy to support Portuguese families in light of the current economic situation.

According to the Executive leader, the benefits will cover approximately two million pensioners across the country. This number represents a significant portion of the Portuguese population that depends exclusively or largely on pensions as a source of income.

In addition to pensioners, the tax relief measures will also cover approximately two million Portuguese households. The combined impact of these initiatives aims to reduce the burden of the tax load and ensure greater purchasing power for citizens.

The announcement of these measures comes in a context of growing concern over the cost of living and inflation, which have particularly affected the most vulnerable groups in Portuguese society, namely elderly people with lower pensions and families with intermediate incomes.

Auto insurance refusals lead ASF to intervene in 17 cases in 2025

The Authority for Insurance Supervision and Pension Funds (ASF) intervened in 2025 to guarantee mandatory Motor Third Party Liability coverage for 17 vehicles, after successive refusals by insurance companies, representing an increase of approximately 42% compared to the 12 cases registered in 2023 and 2024. When insurance companies reject a subscription at least three times, ASF activates the SORCA mechanism, a last-resort solution, upon proof of refusal from at least three different companies. Insurance companies' risk assessment is based on the claims history declaration and, where applicable, on internal data regarding frequency and indemnity amounts. The obligation to accept the contract is distributed proportionally to the insurance companies' market shares, with coverage limited to mandatory third party liability insurance.

Bad weather: One hundred companies in the Leiria Region with eligible applications left without support

Around 100 companies in the Leiria Region affected by storm Kristin have eligible applications to the Reindustrializar Line, but were left without support due to the exhaustion of the financial allocation. The president of CIM, Jorge Vala, warned that some companies, especially the weaker ones or those with longer downtime, may face continuity risks, underscoring the importance of financial reinforcement for the region's business recovery and resilience. CIM also expressed concern over situations where companies were penalised for not submitting a damage certification document, something that was not due to company responsibility, but rather due to the failure of municipalities to issue such documents.
