South African government appeals to Constitutional Court to block auction of Mandela's belongings

The South African government appealed today to the country's Constitutional Court to try to stop the auction, in the United States of America, of objects that belonged to Nelson Mandela, arguing that they are part of the national heritage.

The legal battle, started four years ago, involves 29 objects, including the identity card of the hero of the anti-apartheid struggle and some of his iconic shirts, which a North American auction house intended to sell in collaboration with one of Mandela's daughters.
