The motion of censure against the Government proposed by Chega will be rejected this Tuesday in Parliament, since only the proposing party declared a vote in favor. PSD, CDS-PP, Iniciativa Liberal, Livre and PAN will all vote against, while the Socialist Party, Left Block and Portuguese Communist Party will abstain.
PS announced on Monday that it would abstain on the motion. Its leader, José Luís Carneiro, considered that this position avoids a political crisis but does not absolve the Government of its responsibilities regarding Portuguese citizens' problems, such as cost of living, health, housing and wages.
PCP, led by Jerónimo de Sousa who spoke during the Avante! Festival, stated that there are several reasons to censure the Government, but refused to feed what it considered Chega's demagogic and lying agenda. BE's sole deputy, Andreia Galvão, also announced that she would abstain.
Iniciativa Liberal, Livre and PAN also announced they would vote against the motion, although they acknowledged that Minister Luís Neves has explanations to give. Mariana Leitão, from IL, considered that the circumstances seriously weaken the Government and that the Prime Minister should have dismissed the minister. Isabel Mendes Lopes, from Livre, criticized Chega, classifying the motion as another episode of folklore.
