Who is Dan Driscoll, the youngest US Secretary of State who turned his back on Trump

Expresso8 September 2026 at 14:00

Dan Driscoll is the youngest Secretary of State in the history of the United States. Son and grandson of military men, he went from Army officer to holding the highest position in American diplomacy in just over a decade. His military career and legal training marked the path that led him to the center of power.

Driscoll met J.D. Vance during his studies and entered Trump's circle, becoming one of his closest allies. His proximity to the vice president and his experience in the army facilitated his political rise.

After months of tension with Pete Hegseth, Driscoll ultimately resigned from the position of Army Secretary. Trump had the nickname "drone guy" for Driscoll, referring to his experience in the defense technology sector.

Leiria considers "manifestly insufficient" the 60% support for damage caused by bad weather

The president of the Intermunicipal Community of the Leiria Region, Jorge Vala, considered the maximum support of 60% from the Municipal Emergency Fund for the municipalities affected by the storms at the beginning of the year "manifestly insufficient," arguing that this amount should be increased to 85% or 100%, as has happened in other situations. Jorge Vala added that there is an expectation of a proposal in the Assembly of the Republic to that end, noting that the 40% municipal co-payment represents a very significant burden on municipal treasuries. The mayor also expressed concern that significant investments in civil protection, such as the removal of waste and woody material costing over nine million euros, are not covered by the available support.
