The Volusia School Board is expected to vote on Tuesday (8) on an update to the Student Conduct and Discipline Code, with specific rules for cases involving e-cigarette use, vaping device possession, and fights among students.
The proposal comes amid concern from educational authorities about the occurrence of these behaviors on school campuses. The goal is to establish clearer and more standardized consequences for students involved, reinforcing safety and discipline rules. E-cigarette use is already prohibited on Volusia County school properties, but the district has been seeking ways to address the increasing cases.
In 2024, Volusia authorities warned that cases involving e-cigarettes were being identified at different grade levels, leading the district to expand prevention and awareness efforts among students and families. The concern is not limited to older students, and the new proposal also addresses fights and other behaviors that compromise the school environment.
Tuesday's vote could determine the new guidelines that will be incorporated into the district's disciplinary code. The expectation is that the changes will provide schools with clearer tools to deal with situations that affect safety, coexistence, and the learning environment.
