A customer in Hong Kong, China, had a horrible experience when opening a lunch box purchased from a local restaurant. She found a newborn baby rat, alive and covered in the meal's sauce, moving around among a portion of the noodles. The case quickly went viral on Chinese social media.
The person who made the purchase kept the packaging intact and immediately contacted the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. The complaint was made on Monday, September 7. After the report, authorities seized the food for examination and inspected the establishment responsible.
The authorities' inspection found poor hygiene conditions at various points in the restaurant. Based on the Food Business Regulation, proceedings were opened against the establishment's operator.
The public agency reported that it is investigating all stages of the process, from food preparation to delivery. According to the Shanghai Daily newspaper, the department continues to conduct the investigation into the case.
