More borders, less solidarity: Ceuta crisis forces migrant NGOs to change strategy

SAPO Notícias8 September 2026 at 11:21

The migration crisis in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on African soil, provoked a political response that highlighted a significant transformation in the European debate on migration. The mass arrival of migrants at the border revealed a hardening of political positions and a clear reduction in solidarity among the European Union member states.

This situation is forcing non-governmental organizations that defend migrants' rights to reformulate their intervention strategies. NGOs face the challenge of continuing to influence migration policies and public opinion in an increasingly hostile context toward immigration.

The changes in the European political landscape, marked by the growth of anti-immigration forces, have made the work of these organizations more difficult. Many of them find themselves forced to adapt their messages and methods of action in order to maintain some capacity for intervention with institutions and society.
