The new School Centre in Mértola was inaugurated on Monday, October 7, representing an investment of almost 2.5 million euros. The educational facility has capacity to accommodate more than 150 children in pre-school and 1st cycle of basic education, with eight activity rooms, a kitchenette, multi-activity rooms, a library, a laboratory, and various outdoor play areas.
The mayor of Mértola, Mário Tomé, stated that the new School Centre offers "excellent conditions" to welcome students from the municipality, considering that the infrastructure also represents an investment to promote the attractiveness of the municipality.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Secretary of State for School Administration, Maria Luísa Oliveira, who argued that "a modern school is not a luxury" and that it is essential that students' conditions are the best possible. The government official also congratulated the Municipality of Mértola for its consistent investment in Education over the years.
Present at the occasion, the president of the Coordination and Regional Development Commission of Alentejo, Ricardo Pinheiro, described the new School Centre as a "magnificent work" that competes with the best examples in Education.
