The documentary "Gonzaguinha, da maior liberdade", directed by Susanna Lira, arrived in theaters last Thursday after winning the Kikito for best documentary at the Gramado Festival. The work portrays singer-songwriter Luiz Gonzaga Jr., known as Gonzaguinha, as a figure with "courage to face the system."
Gonzaguinha, who died at age 45 in 1991, had a Herculean task to separate himself from the image of his father, the King of Baião, Luiz Gonzaga (1912-1989). Even though he was not raised by his father and followed a musical style very different from what transformed the performer of "Asa branca" into a legend of Brazilian music, Gonzaguinha frequently had his image tied to that of his father.
This tendency also manifested itself in national cinema, with works such as "Gonzaga: de pai pra filho" (2012), directed by Breno Silveira. Noticing this constant association, director Susanna Lira felt the need to correct this perception with the new documentary.
Susanna Lira is known for documentaries about artists such as Clara Nunes, Mussum, and Fernanda Young. With "Gonzaguinha, da maior liberdade," she seeks to present the singer's artistic and personal trajectory independently from the paternal figure.
