Bernie Ecclestone, former Formula 1 boss, was held at Tires aerodrome in Cascais after a shotgun was found on his private jet. Portuguese authorities detected the weapon during a routine check at the aerodrome.
Ecclestone reportedly explained to authorities that he brought the gun from Switzerland to Portugal with the aim of practicing clay pigeon shooting. The shotgun belonged to the former Formula 1 chief, who was traveling on his private plane.
The case is now in the hands of judicial authorities, who will decide how to proceed regarding the detention and the seized weapon. Ecclestone remained held at the aerodrome while awaiting guidance from the competent authorities.
This is not the first time Ecclestone, 93 years old, has faced problems with firearms. In 2022, the former businessman was arrested in Brazil when traveling with an undeclared firearm, and was subsequently released.
