Bernie Ecclestone, former chief executive of Formula 1, was detained by Portuguese authorities last Thursday when he arrived in Portugal. The detention occurred at Tires airport, in the Cascais area, where authorities discovered a weapon in his luggage.
The motorsport magnate told authorities that the weapon was intended for clay pigeon shooting, an activity he said he regularly practiced. Portuguese authorities proceeded with the seizure of the weapon and drew up the respective detention report.
Ecclestone, 93 years old, was heard by a criminal investigation judge, and was subject to identity and residence terms in Portugal. The process followed the usual legal procedures for cases involving illegal weapon transport.
The former Formula 1 boss, who led the competition for decades, traveled to Portugal to participate in a classic car event that took place at the Estoril circuit during the weekend.
