An avalanche struck a group of 33 climbers in the Bezengi gorge, in the Russian region of Kabardino-Balkaria, on Sunday. The incident resulted in the death of 11 people, being considered one of the deadliest accidents involving climbers in the Russian Caucasus region.
Six climbers were injured in the avalanche and were taken for medical treatment. Local authorities reported that another six people remain missing after the snow slide.
The Bezengi gorge is an area known for mountaineering and climbing activities, frequently visited by groups of mountaineers both local and international. The region is part of the Caucasus mountain range, which is home to some of the highest mountains in Europe.
Rescue operations were initiated immediately after the accident, with emergency teams working to locate the still missing climbers and provide assistance to survivors.
