Government does not anticipate impact on supply and prices after suspension of Brazilian meat by the EU

SIC Notícias7 September 2026 at 15:18

The Portuguese Government considers that the suspension of imports of Brazilian animal origin products by the European Union should not affect supply nor cause price increases in Portugal, highlighting the reduced weight of beef and poultry purchases. The European Commission decided to suspend meat imports from Brazil due to sanitary and food safety problems identified in Brazilian authorities. Portugal emphasizes that the country's dependence on Brazilian meat is limited, which mitigates the potential effects of the measure. The Portuguese authorities guarantee that there are alternative supply sources in the internal and European market to meet any eventual reduction in supply. This position of the Government comes in the context of a broader EU measure to protect public health and the quality of food products traded in the European bloc.
