United States technology giants are interested in building data centers in Australia, attracted by the country's renewable energy supply, proximity to Asia and Australian political stability. Among the interested companies are Google, Apple, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft, according to AirTrunk Operating, a data center operator headquartered in Sydney. The phenomenon occurs amid growing negative backlash against these projects in the United States.
AirTrunk's Associate Vice President of Energy and Utilities, Sabooh Whitalaw, said in an interview that the company has recorded, over the last six to eight months, greater interest in Australia than expected from American big techs. She highlighted that Australia offers attractive conditions such as renewable energy, available land and proximity to major population centers in Asia. The expectation is that this interest will continue growing in the coming years.
