Socrates files complaint against prosecutor who led Operation Marquês investigation

Correio da Manhã7 September 2026 at 12:02

Former prime minister José Sócrates filed a complaint against prosecutor Jorge Rosário Teixeira, who led the investigation of Operation Marquês. The complaint was filed because the prosecutor's testimony given in court is considered false.

Jorge Rosário Teixeira was responsible for the investigation that involved José Sócrates within Operation Marquês, one of the most high-profile legal proceedings in Portugal. The Public Prosecutor's Office investigated the former government official for suspicions of corruption, tax fraud and money laundering.

In the complaint filed, Sócrates alleges that the statements made by the prosecutor in court are false. This complaint comes in the context of a process that has dragged on for several years and that generated great media attention in Portugal.

The filing of this complaint against the prosecutor who conducted the investigation represents another chapter in the long legal proceeding that involved the former prime minister, marking a turnaround in the case by targeting the very person responsible for the prosecution.
