The Municipal School Professora Irene da Silva Oliveira, in Nova Iguaçu, developed an innovative financial education project for 7th grade students. Math teacher Priscila Negros created the initiative after noticing the way students related to money, deciding to bring real situations into the classroom.
The project, called "Bufunfa Negros," features its own currency called BN, which bears the Sankofa symbol, representing ancestry and the idea of understanding where we come from to know where we want to go. At the beginning of the school year, each student receives 30 BN, and from there the balance can increase or decrease according to the dynamics carried out in class.
The main objective is to stimulate from the beginning of adolescence the responsibility in spending, in addition to teaching about economics, investments, and ethics in commercial relationships. Students participate in practical activities that simulate everyday financial situations.
The project has already attracted attention and can serve as a model for other educational institutions seeking creative ways to address financial education with children and teenagers.
