Censorship of the Motion of Censure

Eco7 September 2026 at 08:06

All opposition parties in Portugal want the fall of the Government, although for different reasons. The Executive, described as a minority Government, adopts an oblique strategy of speaking with everyone while hiding in the tactic of silence, waiting for problems to dissolve in news cycles. The Prime Minister now faces a formal censure on the supposed positive effects of governance.

The focus of the Motion of Censure presented by Chega falls on the appointment of the current Minister of Internal Administration, which the party considers indicative of an axis of "structural corruption" that crosses the Democratic Regime. Ventura's party presents itself as a victim of a system of "ethical degradation" and "influence peddling" of half a century, intending to denounce a Republic dominated by corruption.

Chega aims to bring down the Government to obtain the Minister's resignation, generating political capital for its adventures. The article considers that the Motion of Censure will be rejected by a Parliament that dreams of censuring the Government but is afraid to face the Portuguese in elections. The President of the Republic is criticized for his political absence, risking a crisis due to excessive zeal.

After the rejection of the Motion, the Government should transform the parliamentary defeat into a victory, converting it into a Motion of Confidence. The country finds itself at a dangerous crossroads, with a passive Executive, an opposition in reconstruction, and governance delivered to demagoguery.

How Independence Day Erased the Memory of the Black Struggle for Independence and Abolition

The article analyzes how Brazil's Independence Day erased from national memory the black struggle for the abolition of slavery. It recalls that a popular movement advocated, among its demands, the republican regime and the end of slavery, but its leaders were executed in public squares decades before September 7, 1822. The text questions the official narrative that celebrates independence without recognizing the role of black and indigenous peoples in this process, in addition to highlighting how abolition came decades after independence, in 1888, and was followed by the proclamation of the Republic in 1889.
