The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office accused the lawyer representing former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero of "distorting data" in an attempt to undermine the investigation of the case being pursued at the Audiencia Nacional. Prosecutor Elena Lorente submitted a brief to Judge José Luis Calama on July 27 with these accusations.
The representative of the Public Ministry considered the tone used by Zapatero's lawyer during the proceedings intolerable. The brief filed by the prosecutor argues that the attorney altered procedural information with the aim of harming the ongoing investigative proceedings.
The case is being investigated by Judge José Luis Calama, who presides over the proceedings at the Audiencia Nacional, the court with jurisdiction over matters of greatest legal gravity in Spain. Prosecutor Elena Lorente acted as representative of the public accusation in this proceeding.
The Anticorrupción brief comes as a response to procedural maneuvers by the former president's defense, which according to the Prosecutor's Office were intended to discredit the evidence gathered by investigators. The prosecution argues that the arguments presented by the defense do not correspond to the reality of the facts documented in the case.
