A study by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation revealed significant territorial differences in school success in Portugal. The research analyzed the completion of secondary education and identified marked disparities between the northern and southern regions of the country.
The data shows that in the north, 81% of secondary school students completed this level of education in three years. This contrast is particularly visible when compared with Greater Lisbon, where only 67% of students managed to finish secondary school in the same period of time.
The disparity between the two regions exceeds 14 percentage points, which highlights a pronounced territorial asymmetry in the Portuguese education system. These differences suggest that school success may be strongly associated with students' geographical location.
The study by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation thus identifies the north of the country as the region with the best performance in the timely completion of secondary education, while Greater Lisbon shows lower success rates.
