Former colony challenges London over slavery compensation

Jamaica, a former British colony, is challenging London over slavery reparations. The Caribbean nation formally submitted a reparations claim to King Charles III, monarch of the United Kingdom.

The claim comes in the context of the legacy of slavery, which was practiced for centuries on Jamaican plantations under British rule. Jamaica argues that the United Kingdom must compensate the country for the damages caused by centuries of slavery.

This is not the first time Jamaica has raised this issue with the British government. The country has been pressing for reparations for several years, without an agreement having been reached so far.

King Charles III, as head of state of the United Kingdom, is now the direct recipient of this formal compensation claim from the former colony.
