A Boeing 767-300ER cargo plane went off the runway Sunday at Miami International Airport in the State of Florida, in the United States, after landing. The aircraft, operating as Prime Air flight 7598, with registration N1997A, coming from San Juan, Puerto Rico, was operated by carrier 21 Air on behalf of Amazon Air. The aircraft left the runway during landing, struck vehicles and then caught fire.
The accident resulted in five dead and five injured, according to the mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava. Among the injured, three are in serious condition and the other two were taken to a local hospital, said the chief of the Miami-Dade Fire Department, Ray Jadallah.
Over 60 firefighters responded to the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly before 3:00 PM local time. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire in about an hour. Videos on social media show dense smoke and flames coming from the aircraft, which appears to have crossed a road before coming to a stop.
The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) opened an investigation and ordered the closure of all runways and taxiways at the airport, halting airport operations. The news was updated at 10:25 PM on Sunday, September 6th.
