Nathan Saliba's great debut at Villarreal and an unprecedented milestone in the top five Leagues

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General6 September 2026 at 20:00

Villarreal's defeat to Deportivo de A Coruña at the Estadio de la Cerámica left few reasons for joy, but it provided a historic moment. The Spanish club became the first team in the five major European leagues to field three Canadian footballers simultaneously during a match.

Nathan Saliba, Tajon Buchanan, and Tani Oluwaseyi shared the pitch from the 77th minute onwards, when Saliba substituted Gerard Moreno. Buchanan had come on at the 62nd minute, while Saliba was one of the biggest surprises in the starting eleven chosen by coach Iñigo Pérez. The forward made his debut for Villarreal in this match.

This moment represented an unprecedented milestone in European football, with three Canadian players on the pitch simultaneously for a team in the five major leagues, which include the Premier League, La Liga, the Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1.
