The death toll from the landslide followed by flooding that occurred on August 26 at the border between Tibet, territory occupied by China, and Nepal rose from 31 to 43 victims on the Chinese side, according to Chinese state media. The catastrophe left 43 dead and 519 missing, according to the latest toll established on Saturday at 6 p.m. local time. Among the missing, 261 are foreigners.
The tragedy also caused severe damage in Nepal, where it left at least 1,341 dead and some 5,000 missing, according to the most recent official data. China took a group of foreign journalists to the Gyirong Port area, the border post destroyed by the flooding.
According to reports, the five-story border post was totally destroyed by the flooding. A Chinese survivor said that when they started digging through the rubble, only the foundation of the structure remained.
