They rode a world-famous roller coaster. Then they were taken to the hospital for emergency brain surgery

CNN Portugal6 September 2026 at 17:00

A CNN investigation identified more than a dozen cases of serious injuries associated with the X2 ride over nearly two decades, including at least one death. Victims suffered severe brain injuries and needed to undergo emergency brain surgery after riding the roller coaster.

The X2 is a world-famous roller coaster that stands out for its seats that rotate 360 degrees during the course. The attraction has been the site of serious incidents, with people suffering severe head trauma due to the extreme force exerted on their heads during the ride.

Despite warnings about the risks and documented previous incidents, the attraction continued to operate normally. The investigation revealed a concerning pattern of accidents that did not lead to the permanent suspension of the X2's operation.

Victims were rushed to hospitals for brain surgery procedures, many of which left permanent sequelae. The case raises questions about the safety of high-risk attractions and the responsibility of amusement parks.
