PS says it guarantees stability but does not reveal decision on motion of censure

SAPO Notícias6 September 2026 at 16:24

The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, José Luís Carneiro, refused today to reveal what will be the party's decision regarding the motion of censure presented by Chega. This position comes at a time of political tension when the party needs to define its strategy.

The socialist leader reaffirmed, however, that PS will continue to guarantee political stability in Portugal. This guarantee comes in a context in which the country faces a period of government uncertainty.

Chega presented a motion of censure that places the government in a delicate position, forcing the main parties to define their position. The PS decision is particularly relevant given that it is the largest opposition party.

José Luís Carneiro thus maintained a cautious stance, avoiding anticipating what the party's voting direction will be, although he made clear the commitment to the country's stability.
