A court in the United States authorized ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to force-feed immigrants who are on hunger strikes in detention centers. The court ruling allows immigration agents to implement forced feeding procedures when they deem it necessary.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) denounced the repression of what it called "legitimate protests" by immigration authorities. The civil rights advocacy organization strongly criticized ICE's actions against the detainees.
According to the ACLU, "horrors" occur in ICE detention centers that happen out of public view. The organization warned of concerning conditions and questionable practices within these facilities.
The entity also criticized the forced feeding measure, describing it as an act of cruelty that goes so far as to "open a protester's body to insert a tube into their stomach." The practice is considered inhumane by immigrant rights advocates.
