What changes in the rules for teachers? The new rules for hiring, overtime hours and accumulation

SAPO Notícias6 September 2026 at 15:38

The Portuguese Government made changes to the rules applicable to public schools, covering three main areas: hiring of teachers, provision of extraordinary teaching service and accumulation of functions. These changes come following previous legislative adjustments that had already modified teachers' working conditions.

Regarding hiring, the new rules establish specific conditions for the admission of teachers in the public sector. Regarding extraordinary teaching service, new parameters are defined for the overtime hours that teachers can perform, changing the previous conditions.

The rules on accumulation of functions have also been modified, affecting teachers who wish to carry out simultaneous activities. Additionally, changes were introduced to the remuneration increase provided for teachers of advanced age, modifying the existing salary benefits regime for this professional group.
