Government supports Douro winegrowers with 12 million euros

SAPO6 September 2026 at 15:18

The Portuguese Government will make up to 12 million euros available to directly support winegrowers in the Demarcated Region of Douro who cannot sell their production from this harvest. The support comes as an emergency measure to help producers facing difficulties in marketing their grapes.

The support value should be around 50 cents per kilogram of unsold grapes, calculated based on the vineyard area of each producer, measured in hectares. This calculation method allows for a fairer amount proportional to the needs of each winegrower.

The execution and payment of this support will be the responsibility of the Port and Douro Wines Institute, which will have the responsibility of managing the funds and ensuring they reach the affected producers. This entity is the main responsible for the regulation and promotion of the region's wines.

The measure comes in a context of difficulties in the Douro wine sector, where many producers face problems selling their production during this harvest, threatening the economic viability of their farms.
