The problem of Social Security is not controversial, it is an inevitability. This is the position defended by António Ramalho and Gonçalo Moura Martins in a new episode of the Partida de Xadrez podcast, which was broadcast this Monday. The two specialists warn of the need for a serious discussion about the sustainability of the Social Security system in Portugal.
The Executive led by the current Government has already stated that Social Security reform is not a priority topic for the current legislation, thus ruling out the possibility of significant changes to the system in the near future.
According to the defenders of this cause, the central problem that threatens the viability of Social Security is based on the demographic issue, namely the aging of the Portuguese population and the decrease in the birth rate, which put at risk the financial balance of a system based on contributions from active workers to support the pensions of retirees.
