Peru declares state of emergency in five high-security prisons

CNN Portugal6 September 2026 at 11:00

Peru declared a state of emergency in five high-security prisons in the country. The measure was taken to reinforce security in these prison facilities and aims to combat problems such as organized crime and violence in the prison system.

Police will maintain control of the prisons but will have the support of the Armed Forces to guarantee security in these facilities. This collaboration between police and military forces represents a significant reinforcement of State presence in these prisons.

The state of emergency will last 60 days. During this period, authorities will have extraordinary powers to intervene in the prisons covered by the measure.

The measure also covers a perimeter of up to 200 meters around the affected prisons. This additional security zone aims to prevent external intervention attempts and ensure that no illegal activity can occur in the vicinity of these prison facilities.
