From Sunday, September 6, Portuguese airports will begin collecting biometric data from all citizens of countries outside the European Union who enter the Schengen area. This measure applies to all people coming from third countries who cross Portuguese borders.
The collection of biometric data falls under the European Entry/Exit System (EES), a system created to reinforce security and control of European borders. The objective is to register and monitor the entries and exits of citizens from non-EU countries.
Portuguese airports will be responsible for implementing this data collection at the country's entry points. The measure aims to modernize and make border control within the Schengen area more efficient.
The implementation of the system may significantly increase the capacity of border authorities to identify and track travelers, contributing to greater security in the European Union's immigration control.
