Straight talk from Romário: the day I decided to stop

extra6 September 2026 at 08:15

Romário wrote a text comparing Messi's farewell from the Argentine national team with the day he himself decided to end his professional career in football. The former player recalled that in 2007 he began to slow down and in April 2008, at age 42, he made the official announcement of his retirement.

The announcement happened during an event where a DVD about Romário's career was launched. While watching images of his journey, he became emotional and, in the heat of the moment, communicated his decision to those present. On that occasion, Romário declared that after six months without playing, it was difficult to return to official matches and that his phase had passed.

Since then, Romário has continued with new commitments and challenges outside the fields. For nostalgic fans, he recommends watching the documentary "Romário, the Guy," consisting of six episodes, available on the HBO Max streaming platform.
