A resident of São Gonçalo created the newspaper O Catarinão to demand from public authorities the rights of the favelas in the region. The publication is printed, free, and monthly, having been born in October 2024 after a training program by Uniperiferias, an institution from Maré that supported collectives in creating information outlets in the favelas themselves.
The newspaper's founder is journalist Samara Oliveira, who recruited environmental scientist Marcyllene Maria and designer Jéssica Ottone to run the project. There are four thousand copies per edition distributed on the streets.
Days before a packed public hearing in Jardim Catarina, O Catarinão published that Ipuca, a sub-region of the neighborhood, could lose R$ 152 million in works from the new Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) due to lack of popular participation. The hearing took place on a rainy Thursday at 9am and brought together residents from the region.
