A painting from the 18th century stolen by the Nazis 80 years ago was found in Argentina through a photograph in an advertisement. The work was on display in the living room of the daughter of a former SS financier, the shock troops of the Nazi regime.
The discovery was made possible by the analysis of the image published in the advertisement, which allowed the painting to be identified as property stolen during the Second World War. The authorities managed to trace the work to the residence in Argentina.
The painting will now be returned to its rightful heir, thus restoring a cultural asset that belonged to the family before being plundered by the Nazi regime. The case represents another example of international effort to recover artworks looted during the Holocaust.
