A fire broke out at a toy store in the basement of Mercadão de Madureira, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, on Saturday afternoon (4). The fire started around 1:30 PM and was initially controlled by the store's own employees, preventing it from spreading. There were no injuries during the incident.
The Campinho fire station firefighters were called to the scene on Avenida Ministro Edgard Romero. About 20 military personnel and four vehicles are participating in the operation, working on exhausting the smoke and the aftermath, with access to the store's inventory located in the basement.
Customers and shop owners were evacuated preventively during the incident response. According to the Mercadão de Madureira administration, the materials affected, including plastic products and stuffed animals, produced smoke during the burning. The shopping center was closed as a preventive measure.
