Quercus criticizes "irrational bet on golf" and calls for protection of agriculture and water resources

Funchal Notícias5 September 2026 at 18:36

The Regional Nucleus of Quercus in Madeira warned yesterday, in a statement, about the excessive dependence of the region on external sources regarding food supply. The environmental organization considers that this dependence creates great vulnerability in the face of a possible global food crisis.

Quercus criticized what it calls an "irrational bet on golf," referring probably to golf course projects in the region. The organization argues that available resources should be directed to guarantee food security for the Madeiran population.

The association called for the conservation of agricultural soil as a fundamental priority. According to Quercus, the preservation of agricultural soils is essential to guarantee a minimum level of resilience and food autonomy for the region.

In addition to defending agriculture, Quercus also expressed concern about the need to safeguard Madeira's water resources, emphasizing that these are precious goods that must be protected from uses that are not essential to the survival and well-being of the local population.
