Two bathers were rescued in the early afternoon of Saturday, September 5, at Azurara beach, in Vila do Conde, after being dragged by a rip current and getting into difficulty in the water. The alert came during a patrol action on unguarded beaches carried out by crew members from the Póvoa de Varzim Lifeboat Station, who detected two men in a dangerous situation.
The personnel from the Lifeboat Station immediately proceeded with the rescue, using a maritime rescue craft. The rapid intervention allowed the victims to be safely removed from the water, with no medical assistance being required, as the two men were physically well after the rescue.
The National Maritime Authority reminds bathers of the importance of using guarded beaches and respecting safety instructions, especially in the presence of rip currents, which are return currents that can quickly drag swimmers to areas further away from the coast.
