Harvest in Trás-os-Montes: in Valpaços, some have lost 90% of production due to fire

SIC Notícias5 September 2026 at 15:59

The harvest in the Trás-os-Montes region is marked by significant difficulties for local producers. In Valpaços, the effects of a fire had a devastating impact on agricultural crops in the region.

Producer Hélder Martins, from the locality of Sonim, saw 90% of his grape production destroyed by fire. This loss represents a severe blow to his economic activity and to the continuity of the work carried out throughout the year.

Faced with the near-total destruction of his production, Hélder Martins had to find an alternative to continue his activity. The solution was to buy grapes from another producer in the region, thus allowing him to maintain the harvest process.

This case illustrates the challenges faced by farmers in Trás-os-Montes, where phenomena such as wildfires can quickly compromise the work of an entire agricultural season, forcing producers to resort to emergency solutions to preserve their livelihoods.
