Notícias Portugal5 September 2026 at 10:33

The University of Porto won two medals at the 2026 European University Rowing Championship, held from August 25 to 30 in Zagreb, Croatia. The mixed quad scull team, composed of José Canha, André Dias, Rita Faria, and Maria Rita Rodrigues, achieved the gold medal, becoming European university champions. This result represents the second consecutive year the team has reached the podium, after winning the bronze in 2025. Duarte Castro also contributed to the delegation's success by winning the bronze medal in the men's lightweight single sculls category.

In addition to the medalists, Maria Rita Rodrigues finished in fourth place in the women's lightweight single sculls, nearly reaching the podium, while André Dias and José Canha secured fifth place in the men's double sculls. The delegation was composed of five student-athletes and coached by Ricardo Cardoso, totaling two bronzes and one gold for the U.Porto contingent.

With these results, the University of Porto has accumulated a total of five international medals in the 2025/2026 season, including three bronzes won by the Table Tennis team at the European University Games held in Salerno, strengthening its position in European university competitions.

The European university season is approaching its end, with the final competitions scheduled for Tirana, Albania, between September 8 and 16. In this concluding phase, U.Porto will be represented by 16 student-athletes and three coaches, competing in Karate, Taekwondo, and Kickboxing. Results can be followed on CDUP-UP's social media channels.

UAE Emirates renews with Pogacar, who only returns in 2027

UAE Emirates announced the contract renewal with Tadej Pogacar, which represents a strong vote of confidence in the Slovenian cycling star. The announcement comes at a time when the 26-year-old rider is out of competitions, having suffered a serious fall during the Tour of Flanders in April 2024, which resulted in fractures to his hand and shoulder. The team did not reveal the financial values of the new agreement, but confirmed that Pogacar is only expected to return to competition in 2027. This renewal puts an end to months of speculation about the future of the three-time Tour de France champion, who had a contract until the end of 2026.

Tadej Pogacar renews with UAE Emirates... but only returns in 2027

Slovenian rider Tadej Pogacar has renewed his contract with UAE Emirates until 2032, a significant extension of his previous deal. However, the five-time Tour de France champion is expected to return to competition only in 2027, after serving a two-year suspension imposed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) due to whereabouts violations during anti-doping tests. This long-term renewal demonstrates the Emirati team's confidence in the cycling prodigy, who remains one of the main favorites to return to the highest level when his suspension ends.
