DECO Proteste carried out a weekly analysis of the Essential Food Products basket prices, which this week costs €254.73, representing an increase of €2.12 (0.84%) compared to the previous week. Since the beginning of 2026, the basket price has increased by €12.91, corresponding to a rise of 5.34%.
In the week between August 26 and September 2, 2026, the food product with the highest increase was spiral pasta, which rose by €0.25 (22%). Since the beginning of the year, Carolina rice was the product that increased the most, with a rise of €0.41 (30%).
The article provides context that the Russian invasion of Ukraine put pressure on the agri-food sector, as that country is a supplier of a large portion of the cereals consumed in the European Union and Portugal. This factor is added to the cumulative impact of the pandemic and drought, which limited the supply of raw materials and increased production costs, namely fertilizers and energy.
DECO's essential goods basket includes 63 products, organized into categories such as meat, fish, frozen foods, fruits and vegetables, dairy products and grocery, including items such as pork loin, codfish, milk, olive oil, rice, pasta and coffee, among others.
