Madeira, often considered one of the best islands in the world, faces serious problems with its Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP), most of which operate only with primary treatment, without the secondary and tertiary stages necessary to effectively remove the polluting load. This situation is aggravated by the undersizing of infrastructure relative to population growth, mass tourism and the proliferation of real estate developments and local accommodations, leading to hydraulic overloads and the discharge of insufficiently treated effluent into the marine environment. The future promises to worsen, as urban densification and soil scarcity prevent the expansion of WWTPs to accommodate advanced treatment systems, leaving the population exposed to increasingly intense odor emissions.
