The Jury Court of Rio Grande do Sul sentenced the mother and stepfather of two children for the crimes of torture and the death of a 2-year-old girl. The case occurred in Santa Vitória do Palmar, a municipality located in the southern region of the state. The sentences were handed down last Wednesday.
According to the indictment filed by the Rio Grande do Sul Public Ministry, the crimes occurred between July and November 2022. During this period, the two children were subjected to constant physical aggression and repeated punishments.
The investigations revealed that the victims suffered beatings with belts and ropes, burns, and other violent practices that caused intense physical and mental suffering. Both defendants were convicted of torture and the death of the 2-year-old girl.
The mother received a sentence of 35 years, 5 months, and 28 days of imprisonment. The stepfather was sentenced to 34 years, 11 months, and 5 days in prison. Both will serve their sentences in closed regime.
