Mayor of São João do Arraial wins appeal at TRE-PI in abuse of power case

Portal O Dia4 September 2026 at 18:47

The Regional Electoral Court of Piauí (TRE-PI) unanimously rejected an appeal that sought to remove the mandate of the mayor of São João do Arraial, Abdoral Melo. The decision maintains the favorable outcome for the municipal manager, who had already been kept in office following a previous trial.

The case involved an action for abuse of political and economic power, which could have resulted in the removal of the mandate and the declaration of ineligibility of Abdoral Melo. The appeal was filed by the opposing party after the initial decision that did not accept the removal requests.

With the unanimous decision of the court members, the result of the previous trial was ratified, ending the possibility of appeal within the TRE-PI itself. The mayor remains in office and does not suffer the ineligibility sanctions that were considered during the process.

São João do Arraial is a municipality located in the interior of Piauí, and Abdoral Melo now continues with his management assured after nearly two years of legal proceedings related to practices that allegedly constituted abuse of power during the electoral period.
